Memories that will last a lifetime

Caring for your Diamond

Although diamonds are the hardest substance known on earth, they require care to preserve their brilliance. Diamonds have a great affinity to oils. Exposure during ordinary wear can dull the surface of a diamond (for example, lotions, cooking oil and products etc.) Regular cleaning is important in keeping the diamond brilliant and refractive.

To restore the original luster, brilliance and fire of your diamond, soak it overnight in a solution of gentle dishwashing liquid and warm water. Remove it and gently brush it with a toothbrush, rinse it off with clean water and dry it with a soft cloth. Periodic ultra-sonic cleanings are also recommended, as are checks by your local jeweler for loose prongs due to wear. Always store your diamond jewelry in separate jewelry pouches for protection as one diamond may scratch the surface of another.

How Diamonds are Treated

Diamonds are often treated. If you are concerned about getting true value for your money, know what you are getting and buy from a reputable source. Accompanying lab paperwork from an independent diamond-grading lab (such as AGS, EGL, GIA & HRD) is especially important in high-end stones.

  • Filled for clarity: Diamonds with inclusions are sometimes filled with glass to make them appear clearer. Clarity-enhanced diamonds have undergone this treatment. Filler can be damaged by heat or ultrasonic cleaning. The filling does not repair the inclusion, it just makes it less visible.

If you look at a filled diamond closely, rotate it under light, you should be able to notice a bluish flash.

  • Irradiated for color: Can be affected by heat.

  • Painted for color: Can be painted to offset a yellow tinge. The paint wears off rather quickly.

Ask if the diamond you are considering buying is treated. Several states have disclosure acts requiring dealers to tell you about these treatments. The federal government also has disclosure acts in place. Purchasing diamonds outside of the United States will not protect you under these acts.
